Move perishable food to a safe cold location if temperatures are rising. A refrigerator should generally remain near 3–4°C, while the freezer should be close to −18°C.

Safe checks you can make

  • Confirm the controls were not accidentally changed.
  • Make sure food is not blocking interior air vents.
  • Check that the doors close fully and gaskets contact evenly.
  • Listen for fans and note whether the compressor is running.
  • Look for heavy frost on the freezer’s rear interior panel.

What different symptoms may indicate

Freezer cold, refrigerator warm

This often points to an airflow problem, such as a blocked vent, failed evaporator fan, damper issue or frost buildup caused by a defrost-system fault.

Both sections warm

Possible causes include condenser airflow problems, control failure, fan failure or a sealed-system issue. My Appliances Assist diagnoses these concerns but does not perform sealed-system compressor, evaporator or condenser replacement.

Runs constantly but does not reach temperature

Dirty condenser surfaces, failed fans, poor door sealing or a refrigerant-system problem can all create this symptom.

Food safety: If you are unsure how long food has been above a safe temperature, follow current public-health guidance rather than relying on appearance or smell.

Repair or replace?

Age, parts availability, repair cost, overall condition and the type of failure all matter. A clear diagnosis should come before that decision.
