Start with the simple checks. Confirm the cycle is not set to Air Dry or No Heat, clean the lint screen and make sure the outside vent opens while the dryer runs. If clothes are taking longer than one cycle, stop using the dryer until airflow is checked; restricted venting can cause overheating and component failure.

Common reasons a dryer stops heating

Restricted airflow

A blocked vent, crushed duct or heavy lint buildup traps heat inside the dryer. Safety devices may interrupt the heater, and repeated overheating can damage the thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat.

Failed heating component

Electric dryers may have a broken heating element. Gas dryers can have ignition or gas-valve problems, which require appropriately qualified service.

Power-supply problem

An electric dryer can sometimes tumble with only part of its required power while the heater remains off. A technician can test the supply safely.

Thermostat, fuse or control fault

Temperature controls and safety devices must be tested as part of the complete circuit. Replacing a fuse without correcting the reason it opened can lead to another failure.

Safety note: Disconnect power before inspecting behind the dryer. Do not bypass a thermal fuse or safety control.

What to note before booking

  • Does the drum tumble normally?
  • Is there any heat at the start of the cycle?
  • Does the outside vent have strong airflow?
  • Is the dryer electric or gas?
  • Are there noises, smells or error codes?
